Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. They feed 46 million people at risk of hunger, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors.
Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 people in our region – an estimated 285,000 people. Children are particularly vulnerable with 1 in 7 at risk of hunger – approximately 80,000 total. As of 2017, nationally, 52.4% of food insecure households had at least one adult family member working full time, another 10% working part-time, with 13.3% being retired and 15.1% not working because of a disability. Low-wage and part-time jobs – or even full-time jobs – often do not pay enough to keep a family out of poverty especially when they do not include health benefits. Locally, the 20,000 lbs trucks help feed 500 households in Schoolcraft County monthly.
