At Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, we take pride in offering one of the most comprehensive cardiology departments in the Upper Peninsula. Our board certified cardiologist, Dr. Nicholas Hoeve, is highly experienced in the evaluation and treatment of coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, preventative cardiology and non-invasive vascular medicine. Jen Casey, Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner works alongside Dr. Hoeve, offering adult patients care in the outpatient setting. Established patients work with this dynamic cardiovascular team to monitor and treat heart conditions.
Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the heart and some areas of the cardiovascular system.
As one of the most vital medical specializations, cardiology focuses on diagnosis and treatment of any issues related to the heart. These can include valve issues, clogged arteries, irregular heartbeat, heart attacks, and more. Treatment typically consists of medications, surgery, and lifestyle changes.
Cardiologists are highly trained doctors in the field of the heart and vascular system. Like all doctors, they must complete a pre-med degree for four years, and then attend medical school for an additional five years. Post graduation and residency in a real world hospital, cardiologists will then spend many years specializing in cardiology to achieve the extreme .
Cardiologists can further specialize into different niches such as pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, or cardiogeriatrics.
All cardiologists are highly experienced with a range of cutting edge diagnostic tools including ultrasound, blood tests, and transesophageal echocardiograms.
If you are experiencing any symptoms that could be related to the heart or vascular system, a cardiologist would be a good idea to visit.
Anyone who has experienced repeat dizziness, faintness, shortness of breath, chest pains, tingling sensations in their arms, or similar symptoms could benefit from a consultation with a cardiologist.
Patients who have had a recent cardiac episode or procedure should continue to consult with their cardiologist to ensure they are healing correctly and to carefully monitor overall health to minimize the risk of a repeat event.
Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is proud to have one of the most advanced cardio-pulmonary suites in the Upper Peninsula. Our highly experienced cardiology department is capable of performing many of the latest cardiac procedures including:

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.
