A strong community needs a vibrant hospital and a vibrant hospital requires a developing community. Fortunately in Schoolcraft County, we have both.
Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (SMH) is an independent state-of-the-art, 12-bed, critical access hospital which has been in operation since 1950. In 2013, the hospital moved to US Highway 2. In 2022, the hospital completed a 12.8 million dollar expansion project which added a state of the art Rehabilitation & Aquatic Therapy Center, new infusion suites and a co-located administrative building.
The work of its permanent staff includes physicians, specialists, certified physician assistants, nurse practitioners, behavioral health therapists and a nursing team—is supplemented by visiting specialists in Pediatrics, Oncology, Neurology, Audiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Vascular Interventional Radiology, and Obstetrics who visit the area for regular appointments. For optimal efficiency, the Rural Health Clinic is attached to the hospital. The Behavioral Health Clinic is located offsite but in Manistique and our second Rural Health Clinic is in Naubinway MI.
The wide spectrum of services includes: a 24-hour/day physician staffed Emergency Room, Cardiology, Otolaryngology, Physical, Occupational, Speech and Aquatic Therapy/Rehabilitation, Cardio-Pulmonary Care, Pulmonology, Medical Imaging, Laboratory Services, HomeCare and Hospice, Sleep Laboratory, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Outpatient Wound Clinic, Psychiatric Medical Treatment, RediCare and Rural Health Clinic. Its surgical program includes Orthopedic, Podiatric, ENT, Urology, General, Bariatrics and Ophthalmology, operating in two of largest operating rooms in the Upper Peninsula. Many caregivers are cross-trained across disciplines to deliver care as needed within the hospital’s flexible plan.
Our vision: Built on a foundation of trust, we will be a cornerstone for a healthy, strong, and thriving region.
Our mission: To deliver exceptional health and wellness services; catering to the needs of all.

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.
