Medical-Surgical/Emergency

WELCOME TO THE MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNIT

The Med/Surg unit nurses practice primary care nursing as well as a focused attention on relationship-based care. Not only do we have the ability to help our patients heal, but we can ensure that their experience in the hospital can be a highly positive one. We have a 12 bed unit with 1:4 nursing ratios. We care for orthopedic patients as well as surgical and medical conditions. The staff comprises of various levels of Physician Hospitalists, NP/PA’s, LPN’s, CNA’s, and RN’s. The RN’s are cross trained to cover Med/Surg, Emergency Care, and Charge Nurse Role.

The Nursing staff are engaged in multi-disciplinary groups for patient care: Social Work, Cardiopulmonary care, Rehabilitation Services, Dietary Services, Pharmacy, Utilization Review, Laboratory, Radiology, and Registration.

Our unit has the following:

  • Hands on engaged nursing team
  • Computerized documentation
  • Nurse Practice Committee
  • Med Verify medication administration
  • Nursing Bundle applications
    • Hourly rounding
    • Bedside shift report
    • White boards
    • Teach Back
  • Utilization Review Management
  • Rehabilitation Services
  • Ability to care for Observation, Inpatient & Swing Bed patients within the acute care setting
  • Nursing skills that involve assessment care plans, interventions, evaluation, and critical thinking
  • Private patient rooms

Diagnostic, surgical or therapeutic services may require patients to be admitted to the hospital. A hospital setting provides the monitoring, equipment and around-the-clock staffing needed for these services.

Inpatient services are provided to patients needing medical or surgical care, typically requiring a stay greater than 24-hours.

Similar to Inpatient care, Outpatient/Observation care is provided to patients needing medical or surgical care, that require a less than 24-hour stay.

Observation Notice to Patients

At Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital your health care team may include a physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner, a Hospitalist physician, and a well trained nursing staff including ACLS and PALS certified RNs.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Our ED is a 5 bed unit. The staff see approximately 4000 patients per year. Seeking Level IV Trauma Designation. The department is staffed with 24 hour physician coverage, ACLS/PALS certified RN’s as well as an initiative of TNCC (Trauma Nurse Care Course) Certification by 2019.

The ER staff work as part of a team that include physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals to provide care, monitor health conditions, plan long term care needs, administer medication, use medical equipment, perform procedures, and educate patients and families on illness and care after a good hospital stay.

Our staff are often the 1st line of defense for accidents, trauma, allergic reactions, or any number of urgent medical care needs. They work quickly to assess the needs of each patient, prioritize care (triage), work to stabilize a patient, treat the problem, and plan for continued care.

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.
