Family medicine is a generalized field of medicine that covers most everyday ailments that an average patient might experience over their lives.
This can include things like the common cold, sprains, vaccinations, mild skin conditions, gastrointestinal upsets, sexually transmitted infections, blood tests, and muscle pains. Health Professionals that practice family medicine includes physicians , nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Many people will have the same family health professional for much of their lives. Our Manistique patient centered medical home also includes an expert team of nurses and specialists to ensure we are able to provide the highest level of care for all your medical needs.
Family medicine is a medical specialty just like cardiology or surgery, and requires extensive training to be able to practice.
Family Health Professionals will typically perform regular medical check ups, administer required vaccinations, treat common medical conditions such as the flu or stomach bugs, prescribe common medicines, answer any medical questions patients might have, and refer patients to other specialists should they require more detailed assistance with a niche medical concerns. Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is proud to employee several highly qualified Family Medicine practitioners on staff with a wide range of experience and skill sets to cover every aspect of your family’s health requirements.
Generally speaking, everyone should have a personal family provider to assist them with common medical issues throughout their lives.
In particular, children and the elderly should ensure they are meeting with their family Provider regularly to monitor their overall health with respect to their age brackets. This can include developmental and vaccinations for younger patients, and changing dietary requirements and arthritis management for seniors.
Most normal medical issues should be first dealt with at our Manistique family medicine clinic. Issues such as the common cold, non-life threatening conditions, general medical questions, and scheduled medical checkups are all handled by your family medicine practitioner. This ensures that you do not have to waste time in an emergency department, as well as allowing people with serious conditions to receive the timely treatment they require.

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.
