The Cornerstone Program at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (SMH) is a framework providing organizational alignment of strategic initiatives through goal setting that creates and sustains a culture of excellence for both patients and employees. The Program ties employees together to the organization’s mission and vision. It gives them a sense of purpose through the ability to see the “big picture” and know how every individual job at SMH contributes to the whole. The Program balances the priorities of the organization through the use of six pillars that identify specific areas of focus which are the main tenets for any well run organization. The Cornerstone Program is the foundation for the pillars which hold up and support the hospital’s strategic plan. Each pillar is unique and creates an area of focus for the organization. Monitoring all of the pillars ensures a well-balanced organization. Success in one pillar often leads to success in another pillar because there are inherent traits that create synergy amongst the pillars. For example, an increase in patient satisfaction may lead to an increase in market share that leads to an increase in profits.
The six pillars of the Cornerstone Program are listed below:
1.) People: Pillar that focuses on strategies to improve employee satisfaction.
2.) Finance: Pillar that focuses on strategies to improve the organization’s finances.
3.) Growth: Pillar that focuses on strategies to increase market share of existing services or explore new services.
4.) Service: Pillar that focuses on strategies to improve patient satisfaction.
5.) Quality: Pillar that focuses on strategies to improve quality.
6.) Community: Pillar that focuses on strategies to enhance and maintain relationships within the Community and show the organization as a community leader.
There are several employee teams that are responsible to create and implement strategies related to SMH’s goals and strategic plan. All employees of SMH are encouraged to join a Cornerstone Team at some time during their employment. It is a responsibility that contributes directly to the mission and vision of SMH and allows employees to participate at a global level.

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.
