What Is Medical Imaging?

Medical imaging is the internal inspection of a patient to observe function and pathology of organs and tissues. This technique allows doctors to look past skin and bones to see what is happening inside a patient’s body without the need for surgery. This allows for less invasive diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions.

Medical imaging is also used to establish a baseline of normal anatomy and physiology, so that any anomalies can be identified more easily. Most medical imaging techniques are completely non-invasive, which means that no instrument is physically inserted into a patient’s body. This makes medical imaging in Manistique a relatively painless and stress-free experience that can produce a wealth of important data to assist with treatment.

What Kinds Of Medical Imaging Are There?

Medical imaging is a extremely broad field of medicine that involves many different disciplines and techniques. This allows doctors to specifically look at any number of different organs or tissues in extreme detail, without needing to sift through mountains of irrelevant data.

Common types of medical imaging include X-ray radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT, ultrasound, electrocardiography (ECG), and mammography. Each of these techniques can be used for a variety of different conditions and can be performed quickly and painlessly on an outpatient basis.

Who Needs Medical Imaging?

Your doctor may request medical imaging for a wide range of conditions to help them diagnose and treat you more effectively.

Pregnancy will typically involve an ultrasound to confirm the health of the fetus. Broken bones will generally need to be X-rayed to assess the extent and severity of the break. Suspected tumors will often require observation with an MRI or nMRI to gauge the size and location for any surgery. Potential issues in the digestive system may necessitate endoscopy so the doctors can get a visual on what is happening to determine the most effective treatment. Heart conditions are often diagnosed using ECG, which can pick up irregularities in the heartbeat and prevent a more serious cardiac episode from happening in the future.

A huge variety of conditions and treatments will benefit from medical imaging at some stage in the healing process. If you are looking for the best medical imagine Manistique has to offer, contact Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital today.

SCMH Mammography Receives ACR Accreditation

Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in 2018. Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.

It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed.

The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

5 out of 5 stars

The care that was provided by The nurses (Cindy, Felicia Ruth) and staff was exceptional. The entire staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome. We received a call from Felicia the next day to check on my husband to check his pain level and do a follow up. The surgery area from check in to check out was well organized, clean, and up to date. Thank you to all of you for what you do so well and everything beyond your normal duties.

Dr. Niemela diagnosed and did surgery on a tendon tear and bone spur on my foot. There had been pain for over a year with each step, and it was more severe as time went on, and even waking me throughout the night. The successful surgery eliminated the pain immediately! No pain to speak of, and the follow-up care was top notch. Thank you Dr. Niemela and staff! Photo one week after surgery.

Dr. Vix and Dr. Foltz are proactive and reactive. They jump into action and get you the care you need right away. There is no waiting periods regardless of shift change or time of the day. They are attentive and efficient. I only wish we had more physicians like them at transfer hospitals. We certainly receive the best care at SMH with the ER staff and nurses.

I met Dr. Vix in the Emergency Room and he is the best doctor I've ever seen. His bedside manner is so kind, gentle, amd reassuring. He took his time and really made me feel listened to. He explained his treatment decisions and logic clearly, and left room to ask questions. He made sure that I understood and agreed with it before doing anything.
