Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. They feed 46 million people at risk of hunger, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors. In 2016, Feeding America West Michigan provided 24 million meals across 40 Michigan counties which equates to an estimated 492,100 people each year. Locally, the 20,000 lbs trucks help feed over 400 households in Schoolcraft County monthly.
The Community Health Needs Assessment conducted in 2016 identified objectives for Schoolcraft County and one of them included partnering with agencies and volunteers to improve access to food assistance. Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital was able to raise funds internally for an August truck with grant assistance from Superior Health Foundation. Donations were received for Community Yoga classes, a pie in the face competition and apparel sales. Special thank you to Superior Health Foundation for donating $800 towards the Mobile Food Truck.
The Feeding America West Michigan Mobile Truck has grant funds available for future truck visits on October 11th and November 8th. If you, or your business is interested in sponsoring a food truck, please contact Sara Giles, SMH Marketing Coordinator at 906-341-3293.
